Core Unemployment

India is currently facing the core issue of unemployment. The labor force, an economically active population, is increasing daily and migrating to different regions for job hunting. The labor force is growing enormously compared to the employment annually which is creating the problem of absorbing new entrants (more than 7 million/year) and clearing backlogs. 90% of people from the labor force are employed in the unorganized sector which clearly doesn’t provide social security to them. The unorganized sector is made up of jobs in which the Minimum Wage Act is either not, or only marginally, implemented. The absence of unions in the unorganized sector does not provide any opportunity for collective bargaining. One of the reasons behind the increase in the labor force is due to a sharp decline in cultivators, farmers are leaving their cultivable land to work in the non-agricultural sector for instant returns, and millions of farmers are moving away from self-cultivation. The age composition of the population (more youth in India), labor force, and employment are closely interconnected. The day is not far when private companies are going to have control over farmer's agricultural land and they are going to give employment to farmers on their own land. People in hunger for growth are forgetting that sustainability is far more important, they cannot risk sustainability for growth.
